What I had for dinner

Sep. 15th, 2007

06:48 am - Dessert

Finally tried out the ice cream maker I got for my birthday. It's the attachment for a Kitchen-Aid mixer. Holy cow, homemade ice cream ROCKS. So far, I've made a vanilla custard base ice cream and a peanut butter milk & cream base ice cream. They're *amazing*. Today we're going to try out a ginger-lemon sorbet.

Last night I had some of the 12 gallons (rough estimate) of chili I made for a party. We even made chili sundaes - chili in a sundae glass, sour cream instead of whipped cream, grated cheese instead of chopped peanuts, and a cherry tomato instead of a cherry.

Today I'm trying out my ice cream maker attachement on my Kitchen-Aid mixer for the first time. It's busy mixing right now. Very simple stuff today - cream, condensed milk, vanilla (as I don't have nearly enough milk, cream or eggs to do the fancier versions). Once we get the vanilla ice cream down, we'll move onto ginger, almond, pralines & cream, and guiness ice creams.

Tea, or a large-ish snack with my sweetie, who was taking a break between classes and writing papers.

Toucha tea, iced. Cheeses: homemade yogurt cheese in olive oil, Cougar Gold from Washington State University, Mahon, and a lovely local Chevre. Marcona almonds (I'd never had these before - yum!). Australian watercrackers from New Seasons. The leftover ham-&-cheese-in-phyllo pastries from the big baking urge the other day. Slices of boiled egg.

With Pink Martini in the background.

Tonight was "Doc Spence Pies", ham & boiled egg in phyllo pastry. I got the recipe from Roald Dahl's "Even More Revolting Recipes", and this one was pulled from "Danny Champion of the World". I used the leftover phyllo sheets to wrap around some amazing local chevre and some filling for a mock Linzer torte (raspberry jam, the last two handfuls of raspberries, a smidge of Chambord, a smidge of almond extract) for which I'd botched the crust. It's all been very crunchy and very lovely.

Cream of chicken & wild rice soup (chicken done a few days ago in crockpot with a bit of five-spice, wild rice done in a bit of chicken boullion) with heavy cream & diced onion. Dessert was raspberries bought from a farmer's market topped with real whipped cream with a tiny bit of Chambord mixed through.

01:40 pm - Mjedra

I just made about 2 pints'-worth of mjedra. I fried both the lentils and the rice this time, rather than just cooking them with water from the beginning. I fried the onions a little in olive oil before stirring them in too. Added some cumin and five-spice - I really like what five-spice adds more than just cumin alone. Oh, it came out yummy. I also put some yogurt to drain to make lebneh for later too.

Sadly, I can't see the place being a commercial success.
